SUMMARY:SOCIAL EUROPE CONFERENCE: Civil society in the European Semester - road to a more democratic and social cycle
DESCRIPTION:The European Semester would greatly benefit from a more structural and meaningful involvement of civil society organisations both in terms of social objectives and democratic value. Yet\, obstacles to this scenario persist. \nJoin SOLIDAR for its annual flagship conference titled Civil society in the European Semester – road to a more democratic and social cycle on Tuesday 3rd December in the European Parliament.  The  event will gather experts from civil society\, EU institutions and academia to explore the untapped role of CSOs in the Semester\, gather knowledge from CSOs at EU and national level on their experience with the cycle\, and discuss strategies for ensuring CSOs are meaningfully involved in the Semester. \nDuring the Conference\, the results of the Social Rights Monitor – SOLIDAR’s CSOs-led tool to assess the state of social rights and civic space across Europe – will be presented. Its findings will contribute to the discussion by highlighting what pressing issues should be better addressed by the European Semester and how civil dialogue\, also in the context of socio-economic policies\, can be strengthened. \nHave a look at the programme and register to reserve your spot! \nPlease note that due to the limited availability of spots your registration will be confirmed via email by the organisers. \nRead the draft concept note and programme

SUMMARY:Enhancing Learners' Voices: Learning to Listen (LLLWeek)
DESCRIPTION:Jointly organised by EAEA and SOLIDAR Foundation\, this event takes place as part of the LLLWeek. \nAbout the event \nIn a world where our societies are increasingly diverse and our learners face multifaceted and intersectional challenges\, the role of the educator must evolve to become more responsive and learner-centered. This workshop seeks to address this by focusing on the critical need for systems\, in and beyond our practice\, that foster learner agency. The emphasis on co-creating spaces where learners feel heard—and where educators develop the skills to actively listen—calls for a paradigm shift in how educational structures are designed. This approach not only improves learner outcomes but also tackles 21st-century challenges such as social inequality\, inclusion\, and digital literacy. By fostering a community-based approach where educators and learners collaborate on policy and practice\, the workshop promotes a transformation that aligns with the global movement for more democratic\, accessible\, and equitable education systems. The concept of “Listening Spaces” is particularly timely\, addressing the need for educators to adapt their teaching methods and organizational structures to better understand and respond to learner needs. This is essential for the call for system change\, which advocates for educational reform that is inclusive\, flexible\, and responsive to the demands of a rapidly evolving world. \nTime & Location \n21 Nov 2024\, 10:00 – 12:00; Location: Mundo Trone\, Paulo Freire Room\, Rue de l’Industrie 10\, 1000 Bruxelles\, Belgium \nFor more information about the event and the registration form: Click here!

SUMMARY:Join Us for a Policy Roundtable: Achieving Democratic Participation Through Global Citizenship Education
DESCRIPTION:  \nSOLIDAR Foundation is pleased to invite you to a Policy Roundtable along with national and European experts and policymakers\, to identify the challenges at the policy level related to Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and democratic participation.  \nThe aim is to frame GCE as an enabler of democratic participation\, as without it\, understanding the interconnectedness of national\, European and global issues and the role of institutions like the EU is not possible\, with the attendant impact on democratic participation. The results of the roundtable will guide the research on the connection between GCE and democratic participation\, with evidence-based policy recommendations presented at the Thematic Annual Conference in October.  \nDate: Tuesday 21 May 2024\nTime: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\nPlace: Room Van Maerlant 2 (VMA22)\, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and online \nPlease note that the event will take place in hybrid format. You can view here the concept note of the event\, here the full agenda and register here until May 16 (23:59 PM) for in person participation\, or until  the morning of May 17 for online participation.

SUMMARY:From Europe to Bruxelles: Say NO to the Pact on Migration and Asylum!
DESCRIPTION:On April 10th\, the European Parliament will vote on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. This will have catastrophic consequences for the lives of people on the move across and beyond Europe\, institutionalizing the most brutal and repressive practices.  \n\n\n\nSOLIDAR joins over 50 civil society organisations\, networks and Trade Unions active at the European or national level to call for a mobilization in Brussels at Place Luxembourg\, in front of the European Parliament on 10th April at 3 pm as Members of the European Parliament will vote on the same day for the Migration Pact. \n\n\n\nWe will not be silent nor will we join celebrations for the systematic dismantling of human rights in Europe. We will be there together with affected communities\, civil society organizations\, collectives and international human rights groups raising our voices to confront EU leaders and politicians who are supporting this shameful agreement incompatible with fundamental rights. \n\n\n\nWe stand firm in our belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every human being\, irrespective of race\, colour\, gender\, sexual orientation\, religious orientation\, nationality\, political opinion\,  standing in solidarity to those impacted by these unjust and cruel policies. \n\n\n\nAcross borders\, we stand united with people on the move\, migrants and asylum seekers\, we will keep fighting for justice and dignity. Our shared humanity transcends geographical boundaries\, we will resist and keep fighting for a future where justice and solidarity prevail. \n\n\n\nWhy mobilising? \n\n\n\nThe New pact creates a system whereby the right to seek asylum in the EU is severely threatened and will engender a proliferation of human rights violations against people across Europe due to their migration status. Taken together\, these new legislations will usher in a new system for ‘managing migration’ in the EU that is characterised by: \n\n\n\n\nDe facto detention at borders with no exemption for families with children of all ages\, accelerated\, substandard procedures to assess asylum claims rather than full and fair assessments\, and an emphasis on return procedures with lowered safeguards.\n\n\n\nFar more asylum applicants will end up in border procedures and\, through the ‘legal fiction of non-entry’\, will not be considered as on EU territory\, which would lead to lower safeguards and heightens the risk of human rights violations and pushbacks at borders. Even unaccompanied children can be held in border procedures when state authorities consider them a ‘danger to national security or public order’. Moreover\, experience has shown that containing large numbers of people in border areas for prolonged periods leads to the chronic overcrowding and inhumane conditions\, as witnessed on the Aegean islands.\n\n\n\nThrough the broadening of the ‘safe third country’ principle\, people asking for asylum will be declared inadmissible and increasingly deported to countries outside of the EU on the basis of a widely-defined connection with those countries\, heightening the risk of refoulement.  In the past\, this has manifested in failed agreements like the EU-Turkey deal\, externalising the processing of asylum claims to third countries.\n\n\n\n\nFirst co-signatories: \n\n\n\nSeebrücke\, Sea-Watch\, European Network Against Racism (ENAR)\, Abolish Frontex\, Agir pour la Paix\, EuroMed Rights\, Danish Refugee Council (DRC)\, Stop GEAS\, Interventionistische Linke (IL)\, Project Elpida\, 11.11.11… Flemish Refugee Action (Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen)\, SOLIDAR\, Emergencia Frontera Sur Motril\, From Sea to the City\, Solidary Wheels\, Coordinadora Obrim Fronteres\, PRO ASYL\, Irídia – Centre per la Defensa dels Drets Humans\, València és Refugi\, País Valencià pels Drets Humans\, NO ONE IS ILLEGAL\, Red SOS Refugiados Europa\, Be Aware And Share (BAAS)\, Network for Children’s Rights (Greece)\, Migration-control.info\, MEDITERRANEA Saving Humans\, Plataforma de personas refugiadas de Cáceres\, Asociación Sonrisas en Acción\, I Have Rights\, PAR Almansa\, Colectivos en Lucha Extremadura\, Pour La Solidarité \n\n\n\nYou can download flyers in English\, Spanish\, French and German. Whether you can join physically the mobilisation or not\, you can communicate this to Julie Martinaud (julie.martinaud@solidar.org) until Friday 29th March EOB (with your logo attached) as a final update of signatories will be done on 2nd April. SUMMARY:Civil dialogue for inclusive democracy: workshop at EESC Civil Society Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:This workshop organised in the framework of the EESC Civil Society Week 2024 aims at exploring the  role  that civil dialogue should play – if institutionalised at European and national level – in fostering democracy through the participation of various groups including the most marginalised – such as people with a low socio-economic status\, migrants\, racial and ethnic minorities\, persons with disabilities\, vulnerable workers\, youth… This would ensure better consultation and participation\, contributing to building European policies that deliver on people’s needs\, advance social justice and provide access to socio-economic and fundamental rights for all\, while strengthening gender equality and inclusion. Civil society organisations already contribute to EU policymaking with the evidence originating from their direct work with their constituencies\, often constituted by people in a vulnerable situation\, but their impact is limited by a lack of structures and consultation mechanisms that would lead to a meaningful and permanent dialogue with EU institutions in all policies areas. \nIn the discussions we will investigate the potential of civil dialogue and contribution of society organisations for the health of democracy and explore possible avenues for the creation of a structured civil dialogue. In fact\, while calling for an adequate implementation of Article 11 TEU\, the introduction of an interinstitutional agreement on civil dialogue will be explored\, as a tool to ensure recognition and implementation of civil dialogue by all EU and national institutions. Two national-level case studies of successful dialogue between CSOs and national institutions\, from South Africa and Slovenia\, will also be presented to inspire the debate around ways of building civil dialogue at EU level. \nTo this end\, we will invite representatives from civil society and EU institutions to contribute to the discussions with their perspectives. The outcome of this exchange will be a set of recommendations that will inform the EESC electoral manifesto. \nRegister here by 27/2/2024 \nQuestions for discussion: \n\nHow do CSOs contribute to quality and inclusive policy-making?\nWhat are the main features that a structured and meaningful civil dialogue should have?\nWhat are the concrete measures that should be implemented to achieve this goal?\nWhat are the challenges that building an institutionalised civil dialogue will bring?\n\nDraft Agenda\n11.15 – 11.20: Welcome and Introduction of the speakers –  Mikael Leyi\, Secretary General SOLIDAR \n11.20 – 11-25: Opening remarks – Alexandrina Najmowicz\, Secretary General\, European Civic Forum and Board member\, Civil Society Europe. \n11.25 – 11.40: Presentation of the case study from South Africa –  Women on Farms Project (online) \n11.40 – 12.40:  Panel discussion Civil Dialogue: strengthening Democracy \nModerated by Mikael Leyi\, Secretary General\, SOLIDAR \n\nPietro Barbieri\, Vice-President of EESC Civil Society Organisations’ Group\, rapporteur of the opinion “Strengthening civil dialogue and participatory democracy in the EU: a path forward”.\nMiranda Ulens\, Vice President of  EESC Workers’ Group and co-rapporteur of the opinion “Strengthening civil dialogue and participatory democracy in the EU: a path forward”.\nLucie Studnicna\, President of EESC Workers’ Group.\nLaura de Bonfils\, Board member\, Civil Society Europe and Secretary General\, Social Platform.\nIngrid Bellander Todino\, Head of Unit Fundamental rights policy\, DG JUST.\nBenoît Contzen\, Legal Adviser\, Permanent Representation of Belgium to the EU.\n\nQ&A with the audience \n12:40 – 12:55: Presentation of the case study from Slovenia – Tina DIVJAK\, CNVOS \n12:55 – 13:00:  Closing remarks –  Carlotta Besozzi\, Director\, Civil Society Europe
